Mission

AIDS Action Europe is a partnership of more than 230 AIDS-related non-governmental organisations from 44 European and Central Asian countries.

Our mission is to unite civil society to work towards a more effective response to the HIV epidemic in Europe. We strive for better protection of human rights and universal access to prevention, treatment, care and support. We work towards a reduction of health inequalities in Europe focussing on key vulnerable populations in Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

Linking and learning between NGOs and other stakeholders is developed through specific capacity-building projects as well as our Clearinghouse platform, website and other regular communication activities.

Projects

  • Community-based Advocacy and Networking to Scale-up HIV Prevention in an Era of Expanded Treatment (PTAP)

In the beginning of 2005, the AIDS Action Europe, together with other Regional Secretariats of International Council of AIDS Service Organizations (ICASO), started implementing the project “Community-based Advocacy and Networking to Scale-up HIV Prevention in an Era of Expanded Treatment.”

Given the risk of HIV prevention efforts falling behind expanded treatment access initiatives, this project aims to support a broad-sweeping policy and programming shift to increase access to comprehensive prevention services alongside expanded treatment services. Project is concentrated on advocating for and local capacity building on treatment and prevention alignment in the countries where the Project is being implemented (Botswana, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, China, India, Jamaica, Belize, Russia and Ukraine).

In the European region, i.e. in Russia and Ukraine, the Project is coordinated by AIDS Action Europe in partnership with Eurasian Harm Reduction Network (EHRN). At the country level the Project is coordinated by in-country partner organisations – Russian Harm Reduction Network (in Russia) and Coalition of HIV Service Organizations (in Ukraine). At local level the Project is implemented with other stakeholders and organizations.

  • European Partners in Action on AIDS (EPAA)

The project European Partners in Action on AIDS (EPAA) aims to strengthen knowledge, capacity, discussion and exchange among AIDS related non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and community based organisations (CBOs) in Western and Eastern Europe.

The 3-year project enables AIDS Action Europe to further its coordinating and facilitating role to unite NGOs and their lessons learned at the European level. In order to reach the general objective, the following specific objectives are set :

  1. Development of a body of knowledge on best practices related to newly emerging and/or key HIV/AIDS-related topics in Europe.
  2. Translation of lessons learned and of strategies for acceleration of innovative approaches into European standards and guidelines.
  3. Information dissemination and facilitation of exchange and joint action among European NGOs through the development of a European Information Clearinghouse on HIV/AIDS
  4. Provision of a forum for exchange, sharing of information and experiences and creation of European consensus on strategies for acceleration of innovative approaches.
  5. Development of closer relations between European institutions and NGOs

The main project activities to reach the above goals consist of the development of a series of European best practice seminars and consequent European guidelines and the creation of a European clearinghouse on HIV/AIDS.

  • Civil Society Support Mechanism at UNGASS 2008

A Civil Society Support Mechanism was set up at the end of 2007 by a Coalition of community organizations, with support from UNAIDS. It aims to provide communication, consultation, and coordination support for civil society to be meaningfully involved in the review of the implementation of the Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS (2001) and the Political Declaration on HIV/AIDS (2006). This High Level Meeting will take place 10-11 June 2008 in New York, USA.

AIDS Action Europe in partnership with Eurasian Harm Reduction Network is the regional coordinator of the project in Europe and Central Asia.

  • AIDS Action & Integration (AAI)

AIDS Action and Integration is a series of projects coordinated by AIDES, France in cooperation with AIDS Action Europe , European AIDS Treatment Group (EATG) and the Central and Eastern European Harm Reduction Network along with 24 local HIV/AIDS organisations based across the enlarged European Union. The integration projects received a 3-year grant from DG SANCO of the European Commission for the period 2005-2008.

The mission of the AIDS Action and Integration Projects is to support the development of local, community-based HIV/AIDS Non-Governmental Organisations in Central and Eastern Europe, especially in the new and future member states of the European Union.
